The internal restoring force set up per unit area of cross-section of the deformed body is called stress. As the restoring force is equal and opposite to the external deforming force, therefore<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stress = Force \/ Area<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SI unit of stress is Nm<sup>-2<\/sup> and the CGS unit is dyne cm<sup>-2<\/sup>. The dimensional formula of stress is [ML<sup>-1<\/sup>T<sup>-2<\/sup>].<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"types-of-stress\"><strong>Types of stress:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<h4 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\" id=\"i-tensile-stress\">(i) Tensile stress:<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>It is the restoring force set up per unit cross-sectional area of a body when the length of the body increases in the direction of the deforming force. It is also known as longitudinal stress.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\" id=\"ii-compressional-stress\">(ii) Compressional stress:<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>It is the restoring force set up per unit cross-sectional area of a body when its length decreases under a deforming force.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\" id=\"iii-hydrostatic-stress\">(iii) Hydrostatic stress:<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>If a body is subjected to a uniform force from all sides, then the corres\u00adponding stress is called hydrostatic stress. <\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\" id=\"iv-tangential-or-shearing-stress\">(iv) Tangential or Shearing stress:<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>When a deforming force acts tangentially to the surface of a body, it produces a change in the shape of the body.
