It is equal to the distance travelled by the object per unit time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speed = Distance \/ Time<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speed has only magnitude and no direction, so it is a scalar quantity. Also the distance travelled by an object is either positive or zero, so the speed may be positive or zero but never negative.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"units-of-speed\">Units of speed<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>The SI unit of speed is ms<sup>-1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CGS unit of speed is cms<sup>-1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dimensional formula of speed is [M<sup>o<\/sup>L<sup>1<\/sup>T<sup>-1<\/sup>].<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"different-types-of-speed\">Different Types of Speed:<\/h3>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"i-uniform-speed\">(i) Uniform speed<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>An object is said to be moving with uniform speed, if it covers equal distances in equal intervals of time, however small these time intervals may be.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ii-variable-speed\">(ii) Variable speed<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>An object is said to be moving with variable speed if it covers unequal distances in equal intervals of time.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"iii-average-speed\">(iii) Average speed<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>For an object moving with variable speed, the average speed is the total distance travelled by the object divided by the total time taken to cover that distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Average speed = Total distance travelled \/ Total time taken<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"iv-instantaneous-speed\">(iv) Instantaneous speed<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>The speed of an object at any particular instant of time or at a particular point of its path is called the instantaneous speed of the object. Suppose an object covers distance \u2206x in a small time interval \u2206t around the instant f, then its average speed is \u2206x \/ \u2206t. The limiting value of this average speed when the time interval \u2206t approaches zero, gives the instantaneous speed at the instant t. Thus<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instantaneous speed,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>v = dx\/dt<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here dx\/dt is the first order derivative of distance x with respect to time t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The speedometer of an automobile indicates its instantaneous speed at any instant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is speed?
