It can also be defined as the speed of an object in a given direction. It is equal to the displacement covered per unit time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Velocity = Displacement \/ Time<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As velocity has both magnitude and direction, it is a vector quantity. Velocity can be positive, zero or negative depending on the displacement is positive, zero or negative.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"units-of-velocity\">Units of velocity<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>The SI unit of velocity is ms<sup>-1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CGS unit of velocity is cms<sup>-1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dimensional formula for the velocity is [M\u00b0L<sup>1<\/sup>T<sup>-1<\/sup>].<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"different-types-of-velocities\">Different Types of Velocities:<\/h3>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"i-uniform-velocity\">(i) Uniform velocity<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>A body is said to be moving with uniform velocity if it covers equal displacements in equal intervals of time, however small these time intervals may be.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ii-variable-velocity\">(ii) Variable velocity<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>A body is said to be moving with variable velocity if either its speed changes or direction of motion changes or both change with time.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"iii-average-velocity\">(iii) Average velocity<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>For an object moving with variable velocity, average velocity is defined as the ratio of its total displacement to the total time interval in which that displacement occurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Average velocity = Total displacement \/ Total time<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If x<sub>1<\/sub> and x<sub>2<\/sub> are the positions of an object at times t<sub>1<\/sub> and t<sub>2<\/sub>, then the average velocity from time t<sub>1<\/sub> to t<sub>2<\/sub> is given by<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>V<sub>av<\/sub> = \u0394s\/\u0394t<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"iv-instantaneous-velocity\">(iv) Instantaneous velocity<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>The velocity of an object at a particular instant of time or at a particular point of its path is called its instantaneous velocity. It is equal to the limiting value of the average velocity of the object in a small-time interval taken around that instant, when the time interval approaches zero.
